If Early Childhood Development is to progress as a discipline, it is essential to identify the challenges the ECD sector in Sri Lanka is facing. Therefore, while it is imperative to highlight the problematic areas, it is the aim of the Early Childhood Development Project Management Unit (ECD PMU) to find practical solutions immediately to help expedite the planned ECD project Activities.

With this in mind, officials from the ECD PM Unit carried out three visits to Badulla, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa and conducted the following three agendas at each location:

 Progress Review - District wise

The challenges in implementing ECD project activities was the main point of discussion. ECD PMU Officials found solutions for several issues faced in carrying out project activities as listed below.

 Management Information System (MIS)

ECD Officers on the ground in these Districts were given solutions to the issues they encountered while uploading data on ECD activities (numbers of existing ECD centers, numbers of children attending ECDs, numbers of teachers at these centers, number of ECD receiving equipment and materials, programs being implemented, facilities being refurbished etc.) to the Management Information System (MIS), established under the Project.  The recommendations and suggestions were provided by the ECD PMU IT department and EWIS Technologies, the consultants established the MIS system

Mini Census Training conducted in ECD centers in Badulla, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa

The National Census that was carried out in 2016/2017 provided the basis to identify the practical challenges in carrying out ECD project activities across the country. While there are several central objectives in conducting national ECD Census and benefits of the data gathered, it is also vital to have properly trained officials to gather clean data for the continuous updating of the census data base. To conduct the census successfully, ECD Officers from each respective District were trained.

In continuing with the above training and to address practical issues faced during that census, the ECD Project is conducting several Mini Census Training Island wide for ECD officers.
